Ubuntu 7.04 was released and I decided to download it so I could install it under Parallels over the weekend. I didn’t have a BitTorrent client on this Mac, not needing one since I got the Mac at the beginning of the year. While I could download the ISO I figured the Ubuntu servers might still be busy so it was a good time to find a BitTorrent client. I decided to give Azuerus a spin since I’ve heard about it from various places and was fairly well commented on [...] Read the rest »
Mac Mozy: Files Gone – They’ll Be Back [Updated]
See an update at the end of this post. I ran into another hiccup with the Mac Mozy client today. I had about 1.1GB from my iMac backed up to Mozy but after doing a manual backup today that was down to 175MB. In checking the server there were a bunch of files missing from the web interface and the size of the backup it said I had on the server was the same as what the Mac client told me was there. I’m sure this was related to the [...] Read the rest »
Thunderbird 2.0 First Look
Thunderbird 2.0 was just released. Thunderbird is the email client I’ve been using since my problems with Apple Mail so I was eager to get the upgrade. While I like Thunderbird I haven’t been completly comfortable with it and I’m hoping the upgrade helps Thunderbird grow on me. Download and Install Thunderbird 2.0 is available here. It will automatically present the download for the OS and language you’re using at the time. There’s also a link to download the install for other OS’s and languages. For the Mac the download [...] Read the rest »
Apple Security Update 2007-004 for OS X
Apple release a OS X security update today, 2007-004. Apple doesn’t have a fixed schedule but they’ve released one security update a month so far this year. The patch contains 25 updates for 19 categories, see the screenshot for the list. I installed it on my 24″ iMac without incident. The shutdown and reboot took longer than normal, long enough that I was beginning to get worried but it was fine. A second reboot took the usual amount of time. I ran through my typical quick tests without a problem [...] Read the rest »
Apple Aperture 1.5.3
Apple released Aperture 1.5.3. It’s available through Software Update or from the Apple website here. You’ll need a Apple ID and your Aperture serial number to download from the Aperture site. The Aperture “update” download is actually a download of the full program (the same for the push through software update). The software update screen pretty much sums up the information I could find on the specifics of this update. Read the rest »
Avast Antivirus Sound Tip
I’ve noticed that people are complaining that Avast announcing “Virus database has been updated” is an annoying feature. A compaint I whole heartily agree with. Here’s how to turn that off: Start Avast AntiVirus Select Settings from the menu Select “Sounds” from the settings dialog Click the “Settings” button (or just check “disable all sounds” and be done with it, if that’s what you want.) In the “Program Events” window, scroll down until you find “avast! abtivirus”. These are all the Avast sounds. (Speaker icon means enabled) The first one [...] Read the rest »
Ubuntu 7.04 Due
Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) is due for release on Thursday. Ubunto tops the Distrowatch popularity chart with almost 800 more hits per day than the number two openSuse. Maybe this will be the trigger that gets me to install Linux under Parallels. It’s been awhile since I’ve run any flavor of Linux. I used Mandrake (now Mandriva) from v8 to v10 when it became a bit to unstable to be my primary machine. Then I used MEPIS for awhile. I stopped using Linux shortly after my Mac arrived. There was [...] Read the rest »
Apple Backup & .Mac
My .Mac subscription will be up in May and I won’t be renewing it. When it expires the Backup software will revert to it’s trial version and only back up 100MB. So I decided to give Backup a final spin before that happens. I’m dropping .Mac because Backup is all I really use these days which makes it a $75 a year backup program ($100 list price) and there are better and cheaper options. I’ve been using Apple Backup to backup my home directory, minus my iTunes library, to an [...] Read the rest »
Bluehost Updates It Hosting Plan
Bluehost updated it’s hosting plan recently and now offers “more” for the same price. They now offer 300GB of disk space, 3,000GB of bandwidth and will now host unlimited domains. Those are all nice numbers and I like Bluehost so far, but at what point do these numbers become so large they’re meaningless? While I’m sure some websites may near these limits (podcasts, video sites, or any other site which has large files) I have to believe that few sites (mine included) even come close. I have to believe that [...] Read the rest »
Bits and Pieces
Another week has gone by. It being tax time and all (yea I waited) I didn’t have time to put together any additional articles but I do have a bunch of little things I’ve either started or have noticed around the web. Rather than a lot of small posts, or ignoring them completely, I decided to summarize them here. Software News Hawk Wings had news of Correo 0.2 which is an open source e-mail client based on Camino and Thunderbird. With my move off of mail.app due to some problems [...] Read the rest »
