Microsoft Talks Patent Trash

Microsoft made news again this week when Steve Ballmer and Microsoft’s top lawyer were quoted in Fortune. The tone of the article is that Microsoft will go after open source software users for royalties, From the Fortune article: Microsoft counters that it is a matter of principle. “We live in a world where we honor, and support the honoring of, intellectual property,” says Ballmer in an interview. FOSS patrons are going to have to “play by the same rules as the rest of the business,” he insists. “What’s fair is [...] Read the rest »

WordPress Plugin: Popularity Contest

Last week I started using a WordPress plugin to track the most popular posts. Naturally it’s called Popularity Contest. I’m using version 1.2.1 which was last updated Nov. 5, 1006. I turned off some of the features in the plugin until I can get a feel for how it works in a production environment. A couple of the features can’t be well tested in a test environment, plus it seems like a good idea to let it collect data for awhile before displaying the results. The plugin puts some intelligence [...] Read the rest »

DPReview.com Goes To Amazon.com

http://www.dpreview.com My favorite Digital Photography equipment review site has sold itself to Amazon.com. I’ve enjoyed reading their reviews even when I wasn’t shopping for a camera. At first I was concerned there would be changes but that doesn’t seem to be the case, at least in the staff and content. But Phil Askey, who started DPReview will be sticking around. I was a little surprised (well, not too surprised) about the number of commenters in the DPReview forums who considered it a sell out. While I’m as willing as the [...] Read the rest »

Free Disk Space Utilities for Mac

In my previous post about my problems with Superduper! I mentioned I used two free utilities to try and find out where all the space went. Disk Inventory X The first utility is Disk Warrior Inventory X which provides a graphical representation of your files. When the program starts you’re asked to pick a drive or folder which is then scanned and the main screen is shown. Click the picture to see it full size. The left pane shows the typical expanding tree view where you can scroll through looking [...] Read the rest »

Superduper! Adds To The Frustrating Journey

The last couple of days have provided several reminders of why the tag line for this blog is “A Frustrating Journey” and Superduper! was one of them. Superduper! is Mac disk cloning software that I wrote about recently and use for my backups. Since writing that I’ve had a couple of problems with Superduper!, the most recent occurred at the same time as I was dealing with my IE problems so it took me awhile to look into it. The first occurrence was a little over a week ago when [...] Read the rest »

IE Contributes To the Frustrating Journey

These past couple of days have reminded me why the tag line of this site is “A Frustrating Journey.” The first reminder was while working on an update to this site I thought everything was all set. FireFox, Safari and Camino (all on my Mac) liked the site and I was simply adding a widget lots of other people already used. I’m not naming the widget because I really don’t think the widget is the problem. What would happen is the widget would appear fine, but everything after the next [...] Read the rest »

Buy Our Product Or We’ll Sue!!!

My first reaction was this was a new low for our legal system. But after reading the article I realized it’s still on the fringes and that system seems ready to laugh them out of court, should they decide to go there. Two companies (one is a subsidiary of the other, so just one bonehead decision was made) sent cease and desist letter to Microsoft, Apple, Adobe and RealNetworks because they aren’t using their product. Since this is probably a publicity stunt I decided not to print the company names [...] Read the rest »

Patch Tuesday for May 2007

Mac users take note – It’s the second Tuesday of May and that means it’s patch day for Microsoft. Microsoft released 7 critical update bulletins. Three of them affect Office 2004 for Mac so if you’re a Office 2004 for Mac user read on along with just about every Windows user. Two of the seven bulletins are for servers only. MS07-026 is for Exchange Server, including the latest version. MS07-029 is for the RPC interface to DNS server and affects their server software. That leaves 5 bulletins for desktops. Three [...] Read the rest »

Mozy released two updates to their Mac Mozy client last week. I started the week on Mac Mozy version 0.4.1.1, went to version 0.4.1.2 on Thursday and 0.4.1.4 on Friday. In other good news, Mozy is now publishing the list of fixes in new versions in their FAQ.
