There’s a couple of updates to last Tuesday’s Microsoft patches that are worth mentioning. First, Microsoft updated MS07-036 to include Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac as a vulnerable application. So if you run Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac you’ll need to patch it. I don’t run the software so can’t say how the patch works. The vulnerability is rated as “Important” for Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac. Also, Slashdot has a posting about people experiencing problems with the .NET updates from last Tuesday. This was bulletin MS07-040. Most problems are [...] Read the rest »
Western Digital My Book Moved to iMac
I’ve had my 500GB Western Digital My Book drive for over a month and just got around to moving it to my Mac after testing in on my Windows PC. Click on the previous link to go to my post where I write about the drive and installing it under Windows. My intent all along was to use it as a drive dedicated to my iMac. Because of this I want to reformat the drive using HFS+ [Mac OS Extended (Journaled)] file system rather than FAT32. If you want to move [...] Read the rest »
Buy Our Product Or We’ll Sue!!! – Part 2
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070711-library-of-congress-asked-to-pull-webcasting-licenses.html Ars Technica is reporting that Media Rights Technologies is at it again. This is the company that threatened to sue some companies because they didn’t do enough to stop ripping internet streams. Their solution was to use/buy their product. Those lawsuits still haven’t come to pass but now they’re asking the library of congress to revoke the statutory license of online radio stations. Read the rest »

Microsoft Patch Tuesday for July 2007
It’s the second Tuesday of July and that means patches from Microsoft. This month brings six patches, three rated critical, two important, and one moderate. Only five patches are for desktop software and Windows Vista also gets its own unique patch although it’s the one rated moderate. Of these, only the .NET patches and the Vista patch were needed on my PCs. In addition to these security updates I also received a update (through automatic update) related to Intel processors. This was called a “microcode reliability update”. My test PCs [...] Read the rest »

Mac Consideration Makes Frontpage
http://news.com.com/Mac+desktops+are+smarter+money%2C+says+CIO/2100-1016_3-6195778.html?tag=nefd.top CNet’s News.com has a front page story (not an entry to one of their blogs) about a UK company considering Macs as alternatives to their Windows PCs. They have 700 PC users. Now, I like Macs and use them as my personal computers, but if this potential 700 PC switch is front page news then either there’s little risk of Windows desktop losing market share or news.com has an agenda. WordPress Update and Site News
I finally got around to upgrading to WordPress 2.2.1 (from 2.2.0) which was released almost three weeks ago. One benefit of procrastination is that the Fantistico scripts available through Bluehost were updated and I could update with one click through Fantastico. I’m still paranoid and turned off all the plugins before the upgrade and started them one by one after. (Naturally making sure my backup was fine before the upgrade.) WordPress 2.2.1 contains 3 bug fixes along with numerous bug fixes. No problems doing the upgrade or with the blog [...] Read the rest »
I’m Back – IE6 Has To Go
Work, normal summer activities and family obligations has kept me offline for the month of July so far. Even worse, it’s kept me from having fun with these contraptions. So we’ll get back into the swing of things with a rant about Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. If your viewing this site using IE 6 you’ll see what I mean. You’re missing the page links in the top right of the header and you’ve got an extra, but empty, sidebar making for an extra wide page. And that’s after some tweaks [...] Read the rest »
Parallels Out of Compliance with LPGL?
http://wiki.winehq.org/Parallels SWSoft doesn’t keep it a secret that they use the Wine libraries in Parallels 3.0. The Wine developers have put up a Wiki page documenting what they say is their failed attempts to get the source code from SWSoft. There’s also a short thread in the Parallels support forum. The Wine developer’s seem to be frustrated that SWSoft has promised the code but missed their own target dates although I’m thinking 22 days isn’t too long since lawyers are involved.
