iPhoto to Aperture – Should I?

I currently use iPhoto as kind of a digital asset management system. I have about 16,000 images in it that I’ve collected over these many years. I don’t use it for anything other than a quick crop or edit and I never save the changes back. So I decided to see what it would be like to move this library to Apple Aperture. With Aperture’s reputation as a resource hog could it even handle it? What I have: 16,705 images in the iPhoto library. The images are almost exclusively jpg’s [...] Read the rest »

The OS Quest Trail Log #6

It was a light week here at The OS Quest, caused by some business travel mid-week and catching up after a long weekend. Comcast broadband continues to run well except for some points where it just stops. Since the outage seems to stay in effect until I power-cycle the cable modem I’m assuming I don’t miss any outages. I this case the lock-up always seems to occur when I’ve been uploading for a long time. For example, an overnight backup. Eventually the problem will occur when I have the time [...] Read the rest »

Brief The OS Quest Site Outage

Seems like we just had a brief outage. I went to the site to start working on a post and got a timeout error. About a minute after the timeout I tried again and got in. But then I got an automated email from SiteUptime that my site was down so it wasn’t just me. Obviously it’s back up now. Read the rest »

iTunes – The Missing Update

Back on Thursday Apple Software Update pushed iTunes 7.4 to my iMac. Since the Mac was off for a couple days while I traveled I figured this was the update for the new features and hardware. This was confirmed by the description. Now, this morning Apple Software Update wants to push iTunes 7.4.1 to my iMac and it’s also described as an update to handle the new iPods and features. (Click the first thumbnail to see my update history) So there’s been two updates in less than 5 days. The [...] Read the rest »

The OS Quest Trail Log #5

It was a big weekend here at the OS Quest Data Center so I figured I’d wait for the long weekend (made even longer with a vacation day on Friday) to end. With my switch to Comcast I have a little time with both DSL and Comcast since the DSL will run for another couple of weeks. A co-worker suggested I keep the DSL as a backup or to increase my bandwidth. Being a router guy he happened to have a Xincom XC-DPG502 router that he sent me. Since it [...] Read the rest »

Transmit 3.6 Upgrade

The upgrades continued this week with the release of Transmit 3.6 which has become my favorite FTP client, edging out Fetch. Transmit is from Panic Software. The update adds a feature I’ve wanted, one I didn’t know I wanted, and a bunch of other fixes. The Upgrade Panic changed the download to a zip file. To install just extract the zip which results in just transmit.app. Copy transmit.app to your applications directory, replacing the existing version if there is one. I did have to update my Automator scripts that used [...] Read the rest »

VMware Fusion Upgrade

I upgraded to the production version about two weeks ago. I installed a late beta of VMWare Fusion on my MacBook a short time before the production release. It’s set up to run the Boot Camp partition in a VM. I still haven’t found a need to run Windows on OS X but the VMWare beta was about to expire so it was time to upgrade. The upgrade was simple and consisted of the following steps: VMWare Fusion Upgrade Checklist Backup the Mac Mount the VMWare disk image that was [...] Read the rest »
