Leopard Upgrade: Executing the Plan – Part 1

The Leopard DVD was waiting at more door when I got home tonight, left by Fedex 10 hours earlier (damn work!). My memory upgrade had arrived earlier than expected and was waiting with the DVD. So I set about executing my upgrade plan, which is to do a full erase and install. I synced my iPod with iTunes to get the latest updates, refreshed my iTunes library backup on my Airport connected drive then deauthorized iTunes. Then I did one more .Mac sync and set syncing to manual. Then I [...] Read the rest »

Leopard Compatibility Update

Just a quick note that my Leopard compatibility post has had several updates including Aperture, CSS Edit, Quicksilver and more. According to Fedex, Leopard is at my door and I’ll be upgrading tonight. Read the rest »

Apple Releases Three Updates

Apple released updates for iLife, iDVD and some 24″ iMacs. The only update I received through Software Update was the iLife Support update. iLife Support 8.1.1 is a 10.3MB download through Software Update in Intel Macs and a 6MB standalone download. According to Apple this address general compatibility issues and contains minor specifics. Nothing specific. iDVD 6.0.4 improves compatibility with Leopard. I didn’t get this update as it’s for an older version of iDVD. iMac MMX Update 1.0 is for late-2006 iMacs (I hate that Apple does models that way). This [...] Read the rest »

Leopard: The Plan

Leopard’s 36 hours away and I have my upgrade plan. The smart thing to do would be upgrade a spare Mac first rather than my primary machine. So I was going to upgrade my MacBook first and then test out my software on that. But I shifted gears. I’m going to upgrade my primary Mac (iMac) right away. I’m pretty confident there won’t be any serious problems and if there’s some software problem that I can’t live with on Leopard I can install and use the software on my MacBook [...] Read the rest »

Device Driver Update Causes Vista to Deactivate

Here’s the story of a couple device driver updates causing Windows Vista to deactivate. The key line is: So pirates haven’t been slowed down at all, and the rest of us — the legitimate purchasers — are left to live with Windows Activation. Makes me glad the upcoming Leopard has no such activation scheme and leaves users in control. Read the rest »

Google Adds IMAP to GMail

Google’s rolling out IMAP support to GMail. I’ve always been a fan of IMAP which allows accessing and managing email from multiple clients while keeping all the mail on the server until it’s actually deleted. Move it to a folder on once client and it moves on all. IMAP also supports an offline mode. So it’s great to see IMAP coming to a free e-mail service. Read the rest »

Security Quest #7 – New Leopard Security Features

Now’s a good time to review the new security features Apple is adding to Leopard. Besides, between the site upgrade and Leopard prep I didn’t have time to put together another security topic. Apple has 11 new security features listed on their “300+ New Features” page. Some of the non-security features seem to be padding for the list, such as an “empty trash button”. How lame are the security features and which ones are padding? The 11 from Apple’s list are: 1. Tagging Downloaded Applications:It all depends upon implementation but [...] Read the rest »

The Time Machine Quandry

There’s been a lot of noise about the Time Machine feature in Leopard. The idea isn’t new, functionally it appears similar to Shadow Copy in Windows Vista. It has a flashy interface which looks good in demos, but I’d almost prefer Microsoft’s right-click and select from a menu. Maybe I’m just turned off by flashy demos because I figure they’re hiding something. Maybe making backups fun is a good thing that will get people to do them. But, all that aside, I have a good backup process and I don’t [...] Read the rest »

Ready For OS X 10.5 Leopard?

[Last updated: Nov. 1st] [Oct. 29th: Now includes a sentence about my experience when using the app. Keep in mind I did fresh installs of everything and restored data.] It’s time to start going through my apps and seeing which are ready for OS X 10.5 Leopard and which aren’t. I’ll start with my most used and favorite apps. I’ll start with the assumption that the Apple apps in iLife ’08 and iWork ’08 along with Aperture 1.5 will work with Leopard either in their current form or with updates [...] Read the rest »
