I purchased a APC BE750BB Back-UPS 750VA UPS awhile ago and had plugged my Windows Home Server into it but never configured the shutdown or power management. The APC Powerchute software is not needed to do this. (Although I may install it sometime in the future to see what the differences are.) So this should work for most any UPS that has a USB connection to the server. The BE750BB has 10 power outlets, five that have battery backup and five that are just surge protected. Each bank of 5 [...] Read the rest »
The OS Quest Trail Log #24: Hardware and Software Updates Edition
Another busy week on the OS Quest but a lot of it felt like running in place due to the continued onslaught of software updates. The big updates, at least based on size and time, were OS X 10.5.2 and the follow-up Leopard Graphics Update. There were two other big updates, based on the software and features delivered, Aperture 2 and Apple TV Take 2. There were also the minor updates – Microsoft Patch Tuesday, a minor update for Yojimbo, and iLife ’08 update. In among these updates I moved [...] Read the rest »
Self-Hosted WordPress to Hosted WordPress.com
My Spam Chronicles site has been dormant since August. There’s a minor WordPress upgrade out now and a major one looming. I don’t want to spend the time needed to upgrade and I don’t want to run old, possibly vulnerable, software. Rather than kill the site I decided to move it to WordPress.com. WordPress.com is the hosted WordPress environment and would relieve me of the of the upgrade burden. I didn’t want to kill off the site, I didn’t want to invest the time needed for upgrades, and I didn’t [...] Read the rest »
OS X 10.5.2 Part II
I’d been having some minor problems on my MacBook since I upgrade it to OS X 10.5.2 that seemed related to .Mac syncing with my OS X 10.5.1 iMac. So rather than waiting for the weekend to upgrade my primary machine I decided to do it tonight. The problems I was having were minor but annoying. I had to turn of .Mac syncing of the Dock because the two updated Dock items, Documents and Downloads, always displayed conflict errors. The second problem may not be related to the upgrade since [...] Read the rest »
Yojimbo 1.5.1 Released
Last week Bare Bones software released a minor update to Yojimbo. Yojimbo 1.5.1 is a minor update that contains 7 bug fixes. Click the thumbnail to see a list of fixes. I installed Yojimbo 1.5.1 on my MacBook first and ran it for about a week. I didn’t have any problem syncing with the slightly older version (1.5) on my iMac. I upgraded the version on my iMac last night. I haven’t had any problems with the upgrade. I use the basic functions of Yojimbo, filing, search, PDFs and tagging [...] Read the rest »
Microsoft Security Bulletins for February 2008
Microsoft released 11 security bulletins for February 2008, six are rated critical and five are important. Apple TV Take 2
Among the other updates Apple has also released Apple TV Take 2 and it’s available for update through your Apple TV settings menu (or you can wait for it to happen automatically). I installed the update today. I took about two minutes to download and another five to do the actual installation. There’s a new menu interface that no longer looks like Front Row at the top levels. Once I started browsing content the interface looked like Front Row. Apple as a guided tour of Apple TV available. I had [...] Read the rest »
iLife Support 8.2 Released By Apple
Apple keeps the updates coming and released an update to iLife ’08 to coincide with the Aperture 2 release. It’s a small 2.7MB download through software update on my Intel MacBook or as a 9.7MB standalone download. I installed the update on my MacBook without incident. I don’t have Aperture 2 and Apple doesn’t say what this really fixes, but iPhoto and other apps seemed fine. Apple describes this update by saying… This update supports system software components shared by all iLife ’08 applications to improve their stability and performance. [...] Read the rest »
Aperture 2 Released
The rumor that Apple would kill (or sell) Aperture and its other pro apps seems to have been put to rest since Apple released Aperture 2 today. Aperture retails for $199. Aperture 1.x users can upgrade for $99 unless they bought it after Jan 1, 2008 in which case it’s ten bucks. The $199 price seems to be a price cut from version 1.5. I don’t keep track of these things but Amazon.com is still selling version 1.5 for $230 with a list price of $299. (So don’t buy from [...] Read the rest »
