A Frustrating Journey
Recent events had me thinking about what would happen if my RAID controller died or the OS became corrupt? I’ve yet to test a server restore. It’s a long weekend and now’s as good as anytime to test. If I need to reinstall and manually recreate users and shares I have the time. Recreating share and users would never be fun, but at least it would be a time of my choosing. So what did I learn? The Memorial Day holiday is upon us here in the U.S., signaling the start of summer. The local forecast promises the weather will be perfect for barbeques and picnics. I bought the HP MicroServer after reading some reviews and listening to a podcast that intrigued me, but without any real plans for it. My web server has been running on Ubuntu 9.04 which has passed its end of life date and would stop getting updates. While still a solid server, this is unacceptable for security reasons so it was time for a new OS. The logical choice was a in place upgrade to a newer Ubuntu but I'd prefer a new server build since I feel it would be more stable. So it was a good time to review my options. Did I stay with Ubuntu? The BYOB podcast (not the usual meaning for the acronym) is one I listen to every week. It's fairly new and I've listened since the beginning. So even though I don't have any problems with my current host, and my server's been up for well over 300 days, so I decided to look at hosts that would provide more services.
