Mac Backup Software

This is the Mac Backup software I use, recommend or software I have tried. You can also check out online backup options on my Online Backups - Windows and Mac page.

Software I Use

Superduper!

SuperDuper!

By: Shirt Pocket Software Website: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

Cost: $27.95 for full version. Disk cloning without advanced features is available in free version.

An full featured evaluation is available for download from their website. After the eval period the ability to schedule, the smart update feature, sandboxing, scripting and other advanced features will be disabled.

Summary

SuperDuper is what I use for my backups. To really take advantage of SuperDuper as a backup tool you’ll need a second drive which should be as big as the drive you are cloning. You can use a smaller drive, just make sure the data doesn’t exceed the available space.

SuperDuper is an excellent choice if:

  • You want to quickly be able to recover from a bad disk. Just boot from the clone and you’re good to go from the last clone (so schedule a nightly clone)
  • You will only ever want a copy of the latest version of the file. You can use multiple drives to establish a backup rotation but that could get expensive.

Cons

  • It’s not without some problems. See my articles below for the problems I’ve encountered.
  • No versioning of backed up files. Only the latest file is saved.

Mozy Online Backup

Mozy is the software I use for offsite backup of my data.

For Windows and Mac (Beta)

Website: www.mozy.com (aff link - provides extra 256MB of space when registering for the free 2GB account)

Mozy provides a free 2GB account or an unlimited account for $5/mth. They provide a long list of features under Windows, including block-level incremental backups (to reduce the data that needs to be sent), a 30 day version archive, restores through windows explorer or the web, and encryption using a Mozy key or a private key. The Mac version does not include some featurs such as bandwidth throttling and open/locked file backups

Mozy Unlimited Backup - $4.95/Month (Aff link for the paid account but trying the free account first is recommended. Using code E62DWM when signing up for the free account will get each of us an extra 256MB of storage)

Software I Tried

Apple Backup

To enable all the features of Apple backup you need an active .Mac subscription. Without a .Mac subscription you’re limited to 100MB in your backup. I wrote about Apple Backup in this article.
