I run a mixed Windows/Mac home and all my data resides on my Windows Home Server no matter whether it's Windows or Mac. This means my iPhoto library, iTunes library, Aperture library are all on my Windows Home Server. I recently noticed that these libraries were saving deleted files forever. Here's why. Aperture 2.1 Released by Apple
Apple has released Aperture 2.1. This time they’re more forthcoming with the release notes: Aperture 2.1 updates various features of the application and addresses issues related to performance and overall stability. The updates include the following: Dodge & Burn Plug-in. A sample plug-in is pre-installed, taking advantage of the Edit API introduced in Aperture 2.0. The plug-in adds brush-based tools for Dodge (Lighten), Burn (Darken), Contrast, Saturation, Sharpen and Blur. Customize Default Adjustment Set. You can now specify which adjustments appear by default in the Adjustments Inspector/HUD. Updated Crop Tool. [...] Read the rest »
Aperture 2 Released
The rumor that Apple would kill (or sell) Aperture and its other pro apps seems to have been put to rest since Apple released Aperture 2 today. Aperture retails for $199. Aperture 1.x users can upgrade for $99 unless they bought it after Jan 1, 2008 in which case it’s ten bucks. The $199 price seems to be a price cut from version 1.5. I don’t keep track of these things but Amazon.com is still selling version 1.5 for $230 with a list price of $299. (So don’t buy from [...] Read the rest »
The OS Quest Trail Log #16:
I decided it was time to move out of Adobe LightRoom (which I’d be running under a eval license key) and back into Aperture. I found LightRoom easier to use, especially to organize photos, but there’s no way I could justify the $299 price. Since I already have Aperture there’s really no price for which I could justify the purchase. I figured I’d export from LightRoom and import into Aperture. But I ran into problems exporting from LightRoom even though I told LightRoom to export the original files. I figured [...] Read the rest »
Ready For OS X 10.5 Leopard?
[Last updated: Nov. 1st] [Oct. 29th: Now includes a sentence about my experience when using the app. Keep in mind I did fresh installs of everything and restored data.] It’s time to start going through my apps and seeing which are ready for OS X 10.5 Leopard and which aren’t. I’ll start with my most used and favorite apps. I’ll start with the assumption that the Apple apps in iLife ’08 and iWork ’08 along with Aperture 1.5 will work with Leopard either in their current form or with updates [...] Read the rest »
10 Most Used Mac Apps
During the ramp-up to Leopard I’ve been reviewing the apps I use and why. So I headed out to my Wakoopa profile to see what it says I use the most. These are the top 10 apps based on how much I use them according to Wakoopa. 1. Firefox 2.0.0.x – Used almost 10 times more than the second place app and about 15% of the time my PC is turned on. What Wakoopa doesn’t catch is that I run apps in the browser – Google Reader and the WordPress [...] Read the rest »
iPhoto to Aperture – Should I?
I currently use iPhoto as kind of a digital asset management system. I have about 16,000 images in it that I’ve collected over these many years. I don’t use it for anything other than a quick crop or edit and I never save the changes back. So I decided to see what it would be like to move this library to Apple Aperture. With Aperture’s reputation as a resource hog could it even handle it? What I have: 16,705 images in the iPhoto library. The images are almost exclusively jpg’s [...] Read the rest »
Apple Updates Aperture
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/aperture154update.html Apple has updated Aperture to version 1.5.4. The only reason given is “Aperture 1.5.4 is required for compatibility with iLife ’08″. This is a 129MB download that’s available through software update or as a standalone download using the above link (click the post title if you’re viewing this in the sidebar.) Read the rest »
Apple Aperture 1.5.3
Apple released Aperture 1.5.3. It’s available through Software Update or from the Apple website here. You’ll need a Apple ID and your Aperture serial number to download from the Aperture site. The Aperture “update” download is actually a download of the full program (the same for the push through software update). The software update screen pretty much sums up the information I could find on the specifics of this update. Read the rest »
