Apple released patches for several apps in the iLife ’08 Suite. iPhoto 7.1.4 is the only one that contains feature enhancements in addition to the typical “compatibility” and “stability updates”: This update contains new holiday greeting card and postcard themes for use with Apple print products. There’s also iMovie 7.1.4, iWeb 2.0.4, and a general iLife Support 8.3 update. All three contain the terse description: This update improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues. It is recommended… I applied the update to all my Macs without [...] Read the rest »
Goodbye .Mac, Hello MobileMe
Apple’s .Mac brand is in it’s final days and will be re-branded MobileMe to coincide with the iPhone 3G launch. While this is mostly a branding change for existing .mac users, there is one feature that is already lost. Bookmarks are no longer available via the web, although they will still sync between Macs. At one time I used this but stopped long ago. The lack of an outcry tells me no one else used it either. MobileMe also requires OS X 10.4.11 or better (Apple recommends Leopard of course). Apple Releases Airport Utility 5.3.1
Apple release Airport Utility 5.3.1 today. It was a 10.6MB download through Apple’s Software Update on my Intel Macs running Leopard. The update is described as: The AirPort Base Station Update 2008-001 includes general fixes and compatibility updates for the following applications: - AirPort Utility - AirPort Disk Utility - AirPort Base Station Agent I haven’t seen the update posted on Apple’s download page yet, but I would expect it to be there eventually. Some sites are reporting that the updates are available through the download page but the links [...] Read the rest »
Apple Releases Three Updates
Apple released updates for iLife, iDVD and some 24″ iMacs. The only update I received through Software Update was the iLife Support update. iLife Support 8.1.1 is a 10.3MB download through Software Update in Intel Macs and a 6MB standalone download. According to Apple this address general compatibility issues and contains minor specifics. Nothing specific. iDVD 6.0.4 improves compatibility with Leopard. I didn’t get this update as it’s for an older version of iDVD. iMac MMX Update 1.0 is for late-2006 iMacs (I hate that Apple does models that way). This [...] Read the rest »
Ready For OS X 10.5 Leopard?
[Last updated: Nov. 1st] [Oct. 29th: Now includes a sentence about my experience when using the app. Keep in mind I did fresh installs of everything and restored data.] It’s time to start going through my apps and seeing which are ready for OS X 10.5 Leopard and which aren’t. I’ll start with my most used and favorite apps. I’ll start with the assumption that the Apple apps in iLife ’08 and iWork ’08 along with Aperture 1.5 will work with Leopard either in their current form or with updates [...] Read the rest »

iTunes 7.4.2 Released
Apple has released iTunes 7.4.2 for both Mac and Windows. In typical Apple fashion the description is a terse: iTunes 7.4.2 addresses an issue with creating ringtones using iTunes Plus song purchases and includes bug fixes to improve stability and performance. Hey, it’s been over a week since the last update. Maybe all Mac software should have “broadband” as a requirement. It’s needed to download all these updates. The update is available through Software Update or as a direct download. It’s 38MB for the Mac and 49MB for Windows. Mac: [...] Read the rest »
iPhoto to Aperture – Should I?
I currently use iPhoto as kind of a digital asset management system. I have about 16,000 images in it that I’ve collected over these many years. I don’t use it for anything other than a quick crop or edit and I never save the changes back. So I decided to see what it would be like to move this library to Apple Aperture. With Aperture’s reputation as a resource hog could it even handle it? What I have: 16,705 images in the iPhoto library. The images are almost exclusively jpg’s [...] Read the rest »
