MacMozy Beta Updated to v0.6.2.2

Updated 8/28: See section in red block. Mozy released MacMozy 0.6.2.2 (23015), their online backup software for the Mac which is still in beta. This release was a reminder to me about the downside of beta software. I upgraded both my iMac and my Macbook. The MacBook upgrade went relatively well. I’d describe it as quirky but problem free. My Macbook backup is very small at 150MB with few changes between backups. My iMac upgrade was quirky and then became problematic. Both Macs – Quirky I downloaded and installed the [...] Read the rest »

MacMozy Beta Updated to 0.6.2.0

Mozy has updated their Mozy Mac beta software to version 0.6.2.0. Mozy has a list of bug fixes that are in this version and they’ve expanded the scheduling options to detect how busy the Mac is and to not back up if it’s above the threshold that you’ve set. You can also not get alerted if a backup hasn’t occurred in a set number of days. I installed the software and did a manual backup without incident. The Mozy software has been very reliable for me although I don’t have [...] Read the rest »

MacMozy Updated – Features Added

Mozy released a couple of updates to their Mac backup software (beta) in the last couple of weeks. The update to 0.6.0.0 added some new features. This was followed by 0.6.0.2 which seems to have just been bug fixes. Mozy doesn’t list fixes included in each specific version, their FAQ says the following bugs were fixed since version 0.4.1.4: Backup sets not saving Machine name bug Other machine usage bug (365mb used by….) Memory leak/ absurd resource usage Repeated MozyServerError2 Clicking the status window could open a Mozy error page [...] Read the rest »

MacMozy Beta Updated

Mozy updated their Mac client (a.k.a. MacMozy) earlier this week. The latest version is now 0.5.1.0. The only documented fix over version 0.5.0.0 is a fix identified as “Memory leak/ absurd resource usage”. A full list of earlier fixes and additional information can be found in the MacMoxy FAQ. While not new to this latest version a couple of new features have found their way into the beta. One is that now files greater than 4MB will take advantage of block level differential backups. This means that once a file [...] Read the rest »

MacMozy 0.5.0.0 Released

Mozy has updated their MacMozy client, which is still in beta. They didn’t publish a list of changes in this release, at least not yet. But they did have a list of known issues for the previous release and said they would be fixed in the “next” release, which would be this one. The issues listed were: Repeated MozyServerError2 Clicking the status window could open a Mozy error page in the browser Backup sets can now find files Spotlight doesn’t find Backs up files and folders moved into locations that [...] Read the rest »

Zonbu: PeoplePC Reincarnated

Back when PeoplePC was first created it provided a “free” PC (replaced every three years), dial-up Internet service and in-home warranty service for a monthly subscription of around $25. Despite ads promoting it as a free PC with an Internet subscription it had all the earmarks of a financing plan. These days PeoplePC is just a dial-up ISP brand that’s part of Earthlink. Zonbu has taken the PeoplePC model and updated it for Web 2.0. And then dropped the Internet connection. Zonbu is getting ready to offer a service that [...] Read the rest »

MacMozy Beta Client Updated – Twice

Mozy released two updates to their Mac Mozy client last week. I started the week on Mac Mozy version 0.4.1.1, went to version 0.4.1.2 on Thursday and 0.4.1.4 on Friday. In other good news, Mozy is now publishing the list of fixes in new versions in their FAQ. Version 0.4.1.2 fixed the following bugs: Unable to select files on partitions beside the operating system’s partition. Log file filling up hard drive. Unable to select files on external hard drives. Selecting files and folders yielded strange sizes. The backup would hang [...] Read the rest »

Mozy News Update

Mozy made the news this week by signing a big deal with GE. Both TechCrunch and the International Herald Tribune are reporting the story. Based on the stories GE will be using the MozyPro version of the software to back up 300,000 desktops. MozyPro is similar to the free consumer software but they add 24/7 support, server support and centralized administration. Mozy has 25 employees and they say they’ve signed up 3,000 companies since December. You can click the banner below to sign up for a free 2GB account. Currently [...] Read the rest »

Mozy Mac Beta Software Update

Mozy has released an update to their Mac client software which is still an early beta. The version gets bumped from 0.4.0.8 to 0.4.0.9. I’ve been having a problem with the software lately where files vanish from the server. Although it appears they actually get removed by the client since I see delete messages in the log. Sometimes they get backed up again at a later time although at the moment I’ve only got 341MB out of my 1.2GB backup on the server. I’m hoping this release fixes that. I [...] Read the rest »

Apple Backup & .Mac

My .Mac subscription will be up in May and I won’t be renewing it. When it expires the Backup software will revert to it’s trial version and only back up 100MB. So I decided to give Backup a final spin before that happens. I’m dropping .Mac because Backup is all I really use these days which makes it a $75 a year backup program ($100 list price) and there are better and cheaper options. I’ve been using Apple Backup to backup my home directory, minus my iTunes library, to an [...] Read the rest »
