I’ve still been using the Mac client for Mozy backup and it’s a good time for an update. To recap, the Mac client is still a early limited beta. In this case limited means it was offered to anyone who asked to be notified when the Mac client was available. There’s no Mac documentation yet so I’m kind of winging it. Mozy sends files to the server in an intelligent manner. If you have multiple copies of the exact same file it only sends the file once, although it is [...] Read the rest »
Mozy Mac Software Updated to Beta Version 0.4.0.8
Mozy updated the Mac beta software to version 0.4.0.8 (18248M). The previous version was 0.4.0.7. If you don’t have automatic updates set you’ll get a notification with an option to install. First thing I noticed is that Mozy now included the backup history detail. Previously it had only recorded that the backup happened (or failed) but did not include the file details. Now the history screen properly shows the details. I haven’t noticed any other changes in the short time I had it. After using Mozy over the weekend I’ve [...] Read the rest »
Mozy Mac Backup – Beta Arrives
[Updated 3/17 to reflect that the web download files are encrypted.] I’d asked to be notified by Mozy when they had a Mac client available, and earlier this week I got an e-mail from them that a beta was available. Although Apple’s Backup.app has done OK for me (all my test restores have worked but I’ve never truly needed it) it’s quirky, it’s backup methodology is limited and the lack of a verify concerns me. So I was happy to see another low cost backup solution becoming available for the [...] Read the rest »
Carbonite – Online Backup
I’m taking a look at Carbonite Backup as my next backup solution. In short, it seems almost perfect. (Almost – because there’s no Mac client although they say one will be coming in early 2007.) It’s the cheapest backup solution out there, $50/yr or $90 for 2 years with unlimited storage. (I just noticed today that Mozy changed their pricing structure and is now very competitive.) The software installation is quick and easy. Other software software and service vendors should take the hint. There’s a 15-day trial with no credit [...] Read the rest »
XDrive – Not Ready For Backup on Mac or Win
I tried to give XDrive a spin on both Windows and OS X, concentrating on it’s backup abilities. But all I did was crash. On the Windows side the most I was able to back up before getting an error was 70MB. Each time I received a 2151 error. The error is discussed in this forum thread. Their recommended work around is to try the backup off hours, which for XDrive is during the day. Some responses said this didn’t work. I tried several backups over several nights and always [...] Read the rest »
XDrive – Free Disk Space From AOL
After signing up for the AOL e-mail I was looking around the AOL website. Now that they’ve been losing customers they seem to have adopted the business model of dropping their price to free but making up for it in volume. They’ve gone Google and will try to make it up in advertising revenue. Anyway, one thing that caught my eye was their XDrive offering. It’s 5GB of disk space for free. They didn’t want any additional info beyond what they collected for the e-mail account so I signed up [...] Read the rest »
