I’ve been looking at several domain registrars recently and have used a few in the past. I figure now would be a good time to summarize my views of each. In this article I’ll cover the registrars I’ve used in the past but not anymore. These registrars exist mostly to provide domain registration for their hosting customers. Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting – This is where I put my first website years ago. I picked them because they had a deal with my ISP for a low monthly price (no [...] Read the rest »
The OS Quest #31 Trail Log: Host Blues Edition
Things began to go bad Monday night, although I didn’t know how bad until Tuesday. On Monday I got an email from SiteUpTime saying my site was inaccessible and sure enough it was – for about 45 minutes. Bluehost said the server was experiencing performance issues and was looking into it. When the site came back online I checked it through my stats package URL instead of a WordPress URL, so while I got a response from the site I didn’t realize that the WordPress DB was corrupt. Now since [...] Read the rest »
Site Outage
The OS Quest went down yesterday and stayed down for over 12 hours. It appears I had some database corruption that began with a hosting problem. Seems like everything is almost back to normal now although there may be some problems lurking in the shadows. One problem is that the menu bar to the pages is missing, still working on that although any page links in the articles will still work. Seems like there was some corruption in the WP database that began around when Bluehost reported a problem with [...] Read the rest »
Bluehost: Upgrading to PHP 5
Since development of PHP 4 ended in 2007 it’s time to finally move on to PHP 5. This website is hosted by Bluehost and they provide the PHP installation, so there’s nothing for me to actually install. Bluehost provided the ability to determine which version of PHP I want to use on my site through a Cpanel setting. All sites running under the same Cpanel account have to use the same PHP version. To pick the PHP version on Bluehost click the PHP Config icon in the Software/Services section of [...] Read the rest »
June is Turning Out Tough on Bluehost
http://www.bluehost.com I just had my second web outage on Bluehost. SiteUpTime logged an outage 8:04AM although it went unnoticed by me and was back when SiteUpTime checked again. But then at 11:04am the site went away. And like the first time both of my sites went aways as well as the Bluehost console. Since I wasn’t home I couldn’t check FTP or other services or call Bluehost but I figured it was again a server load issue but their status page said the server was fine. Right up until the [...] Read the rest »
My First Bluehost Outage
http://www.bluehost.com I suffered my first Bluehost site outage early this morning. I happened while I was doing the site redesign and in a heart stopping moment I had actually clicked “save” on a update when the website vanished. I quickly realized it was the server (fpt, email, another site, etc…) and not just the site. The Bluehost control panel was also unavailable since its server based. Checking the status page showed my server was “under heavy load” and “may be unresponsive” although the server answered ping. After awhile it stopped [...] Read the rest »
Bluehost Updates It Hosting Plan
Bluehost updated it’s hosting plan recently and now offers “more” for the same price. They now offer 300GB of disk space, 3,000GB of bandwidth and will now host unlimited domains. Those are all nice numbers and I like Bluehost so far, but at what point do these numbers become so large they’re meaningless? While I’m sure some websites may near these limits (podcasts, video sites, or any other site which has large files) I have to believe that few sites (mine included) even come close. I have to believe that [...] Read the rest »

BlueHost Customer Service
I had more first experience with BlueHost customer service over the weekend and it was an excellent experience. They’d recently been advertising “unlimited domains”. My control panel still showed the old limit of domains and when I tried to add a sixth I received and error that I’d reached the limit. So I opened a ticket with tech support through the web and five minutes later I received an email that my account was upgraded although it may take up to two hours to show up. When I checked about [...] Read the rest »
