It’ll be a short log this week. While the Quest has been busy this week, most of the work will make it into individual posts during the next week. I’ve been looking at Jungle Disk and Amazon S3 for backing up. I’ve also been looking at Microsoft’s free SyncToy as a simple backup alternative. Software of Interest Flying Meat has a new image editor out called Acorn that’s receiving positive reviews. From a feature perspective it seems to be a steal at it’s $40 intro price (no mention when the [...] Read the rest »
The OS Quest Trail Log #5
It was a big weekend here at the OS Quest Data Center so I figured I’d wait for the long weekend (made even longer with a vacation day on Friday) to end. With my switch to Comcast I have a little time with both DSL and Comcast since the DSL will run for another couple of weeks. A co-worker suggested I keep the DSL as a backup or to increase my bandwidth. Being a router guy he happened to have a Xincom XC-DPG502 router that he sent me. Since it [...] Read the rest »
iPhoto “Empty Trash” Crash Returns – Yet Another Fix
During the drought of blog postings I encountered the return of my problem with iPhoto, where it would crash whenever I emptied the trash, leaving empty icons behind. You can read about that experience here. I did the usual stuff, index and thumbnail rebuild, etc… without success, I did some web searches and came upon a new solution buried among several others. iPhoto Tribulations, Tools & Tips
I’ve been having ongoing problems with corruption in my iPhoto library. I was up to about 14,000 photos which is well below the 250,000 image limit. Problems included locking up while importing photos and crashes when emptying the trash. I’d do the typical iPhoto and disk repairs. They might help for a short while but then the problem would return. In short, the problems never got resolved. While my process included backups for all the photos, I didn’t back up the iPhoto library itself on a regular basis. I didn’t [...] Read the rest »
Picasa as Host For Blog Pictures
When I started working on the Thunderbird Mail posting I figured I’d have a lot of screen shots. So I decided to try using a Picasa web album to host them. I’d already installed the Picasa plug-in for iPhoto. I took the screen shots as I was doing the install and I put placeholders in the article. To try an make life easy I numbered them in order. After I imported the screen shots into an iPhoto album and touched up a couple of them it was time to work [...] Read the rest »
