Today I received an e-mail telling me my MobileMe subscription finally expired. No more extensions, no more apologies. After my MobileMe troubles I’d already moved off of it so when the expiration e-mail came it was no big deal. I’d already turned off everything MobileMe related so I didn’t even have to clean up. I also couldn’t tell you if MobileMe still has problems since I gave up trying to get it to work long ago. While I didn’t use every piece of MobileMe here’s what I use now to [...] Read the rest »
Another MobileMe Extension From Apple
Apple has extended MobileMe subscriptions for an additional 60 days. My paid subscription expired recently and I’m currently running under the previous 30 day extension, with 20 days left. Things may change after the latest 60 day extension, but I still plan to leave MobileMe when my subscription expires. Shortly before I received the latest extension notice I had cut the cord completely with MobilMe and stopped using iDisk, the last MobileMe feature I was still using. As I previously mentioned, I’d been trying out SugarSync as a potential iDisk [...] Read the rest »
So Long MobileMe
Just before the .Mac to MobileMe conversion I received an e-mail that my .Mac account was up for renewal in August. I’ve already gone in and set it to not renew. MobileMe still doesn’t work reliably for me on either of my Macs. Apples inability to service existing customers during the planned conversion has soured me on the service. .Mac had been going well and if it wasn’t for the MobileMe fiasco I probably would have renewed as the path of least resistance. Instead it’s time to make sure I [...] Read the rest »
Goodbye .Mac, Hello MobileMe
Apple’s .Mac brand is in it’s final days and will be re-branded MobileMe to coincide with the iPhone 3G launch. While this is mostly a branding change for existing .mac users, there is one feature that is already lost. Bookmarks are no longer available via the web, although they will still sync between Macs. At one time I used this but stopped long ago. The lack of an outcry tells me no one else used it either. MobileMe also requires OS X 10.4.11 or better (Apple recommends Leopard of course). The OS Quest Trail Log #20
CES is over and MacWorld is about to begin. Can’t say anything at CES caught my attention. Stuff was just bigger, thinner and less expensive. The big news last week seemed to be Warner’s move to Blue-Ray and that was before CES. I can’t say I’m all that excited about MacWorld either. Curious? Yes. Excited? No. Rumors are flying of course. Apple got the Mac Pro upgrades out of the way this week so they aren’t looking for keynote filler. My lack of excitement has more to do with the [...] Read the rest »
The OS Quest Trail Log #2
It’s only been four days since my last log entry but I want to get on a weekly cycle with these and weekends seem to be the best time to do it. So here goes… Google Apps I continue to use Google Apps and like it. Really all I use it for is email, but it’s allowed me to consolidate all my email addresses into one mailbox for delivery. I finally got the hang of using search and labels (aka tags) rather than folders and it makes things much quicker [...] Read the rest »
Apple .Mac Support Articles
Along with Apple’s announced enhancements to .Mac and it’s increased integration with the new iLife ’08 Apple as released a series of tech support articles for .Mac. Most of these tend to be general troubleshooting and are applicable to .Mac before as they are now. Here they are: .Mac: “An inconsistency detected on .Mac for your Bookmarks” alert after syncing with an iPhone .Mac: Tips for using Address Book Sharing – Most of these are just Apple telling you to watch what you do and when you do it. Like [...] Read the rest »
Apple Updates Hardware and Software
Apple made their Mac announcements today. As with most Apple events it generated tons of speculation. What they did announce was: New Hardware Apple replaced their iMac line with new models. They dropped the 17″ iMac and replaced it with a 20″ low-end iMac. A 20″ iMac and a 24″ iMac are available at the mid-level with 2.4GHz processors. A 24″ iMac at the high-end that has a 2.4Ghz processor. Most of the reports I saw left this 4th iMac out but it’s at the Apple store (click the pic [...] Read the rest »
.MAC – Time to Leave
My .Mac subscription expired this week. It finally outlived it’s usefulness so I didn’t renew. It’s almost a good service but just doesn’t justify the cost. Your needs may vary and for some people it would be worth the cost. Here’s what .Mac includes and my impressions of it. For the $99 yearly subscription (less from other retailers) you get 1GB of storage on Apple’s servers. This space is shared by all .Mac services. The space is split in two and you can allocate the space between email and everything [...] Read the rest »
