Yojimbo 1.5.1 Released

Last week Bare Bones software released a minor update to Yojimbo. Yojimbo 1.5.1 is a minor update that contains 7 bug fixes. Click the thumbnail to see a list of fixes. I installed Yojimbo 1.5.1 on my MacBook first and ran it for about a week. I didn’t have any problem syncing with the slightly older version (1.5) on my iMac. I upgraded the version on my iMac last night. I haven’t had any problems with the upgrade. I use the basic functions of Yojimbo, filing, search, PDFs and tagging [...] Read the rest »

Aperture 2 Released

The rumor that Apple would kill (or sell) Aperture and its other pro apps seems to have been put to rest since Apple released Aperture 2 today. Aperture retails for $199. Aperture 1.x users can upgrade for $99 unless they bought it after Jan 1, 2008 in which case it’s ten bucks. The $199 price seems to be a price cut from version 1.5. I don’t keep track of these things but Amazon.com is still selling version 1.5 for $230 with a list price of $299. (So don’t buy from [...] Read the rest »

iTunes Smart Playlists

When I bought my first iPod I was still on Windows and the software delivered with the Windows iPods (yup, Windows specific iPods back then) was a version of MusicMatch. The software was OK, but just OK. It was slow and a pain to build playlists. One of the reasons I bought the hard disk iPod over other flash MP3 players was so I could have all my music with me and not have to decide what I wanted to listed to while sitting at the computer. MusicMatch did that [...] Read the rest »

Apple iPhoto 7.1.1 Update Released

Apple has released iPhoto 7.1.1. It was a 10.8 MB download for me through software update and it’s a 9.3MB standalone download. Apple’s back to its terse release notes and just says “This update supports compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues.” I installed the update without any problems or noticeable differences in iPhoto. Bento: Personal Database for Leopard

FileMaker, the Apple subsidiary that has a database app by the same name, has released a preview of Bento, which it bills as a personal database. The preview expires Feb 14, 2008 so that’s a good indication of when the first full release will be available and you’ll have to pay for a license. I couldn’t find any official price info on the website, but others have said it will be $49 a license or $99 for a family pack. Bento requires OS X 10.5 Leopard. If you end up [...] Read the rest »

Path Finder Updated with Leopard Integration

Path Finder 4.8.2 has been released by CocoaTech. This release now supports Quicklook when run on Leopard. It can also replace Finder by being the default file viewer when “Reveal in Finder” is used. Since upgrading to Leopard I’ve been trying to stay in Finder as much as possible in order to give it a chance. Coverflow and Quicklook have kept me interested in Finder, only going to Path Finder for special cases. Now with QuickLook in Path Finder it’s going to be harder staying in Finder. Quicklook is activated [...] Read the rest »

Perfect Apple Apps

I have to admit an unhealthy admiration for two apps that come free with OS X. Both received upgrades with Leopard which makes me happy. Unlike their closest counterparts in Windows these are truly useful apps that approach perfection. A perfect app is one that does what it’s designed to do quickly and efficiently. Best of all they come with OS X 10.5 Leopard so there’s Leopard compatibility issues. TextEdit The first is TextEdit. Coming from Windows I saw this as a notepad clone. In the beginning I only used [...] Read the rest »

Mac Text & Number Editing

Conspicuously absent from my 10 most used and 10 most popular lists was any sort of word processor or spreadsheet. So I’ll make it a trilogy and cover text editors in this post. I’ll throw in a spreadsheet mention since my spreadsheet use doesn’t warrant a mention on it’s own. Actually, my primary text editor did get a mention – Firefox. Based on both time any quantity, most of my writing is done for this website. For that I use the WordPress admin panel with Firefox as my browser. I [...] Read the rest »

10 Favorite Macs Apps (that I don’t use enough)

Yesterday I wrote about my 10 Most Used Mac Apps according to Wakoopa. I was a little surprised by some of the apps that showed up on the list and a few apps I really like didn’t show up in the top 10. So these are the apps I wished were on, or expected to show up in, the top 10 list. In reverse order this time. 10. Quicken for Mac (aff) – I wouldn’t call this a favorite. It came with my first Mini so I used it. I [...] Read the rest »
