Upgrades – Patches – Please Stop the Madness It seems like all I did this past week was patch and upgrade. I already mentioned the iWeb ’08 update. Microsoft released 9 security updates so it took awhile to patch my VMs. Apple also updated Boot Camp to version 1.4 and I got around to updating it this week. VMWare Fusion also moved out of beta recently. I’d been running the beta version on my MacBook and finally got around to upgrading it to the final release. I haven’t upgraded to [...] Read the rest »
The OS Quest Trail Log #2
It’s only been four days since my last log entry but I want to get on a weekly cycle with these and weekends seem to be the best time to do it. So here goes… Google Apps I continue to use Google Apps and like it. Really all I use it for is email, but it’s allowed me to consolidate all my email addresses into one mailbox for delivery. I finally got the hang of using search and labels (aka tags) rather than folders and it makes things much quicker [...] Read the rest »
MacMozy Beta Updated to 0.6.2.0
Mozy has updated their Mozy Mac beta software to version 0.6.2.0. Mozy has a list of bug fixes that are in this version and they’ve expanded the scheduling options to detect how busy the Mac is and to not back up if it’s above the threshold that you’ve set. You can also not get alerted if a backup hasn’t occurred in a set number of days. I installed the software and did a manual backup without incident. The Mozy software has been very reliable for me although I don’t have [...] Read the rest »
MacMozy Updated – Features Added
Mozy released a couple of updates to their Mac backup software (beta) in the last couple of weeks. The update to 0.6.0.0 added some new features. This was followed by 0.6.0.2 which seems to have just been bug fixes. Mozy doesn’t list fixes included in each specific version, their FAQ says the following bugs were fixed since version 0.4.1.4: Backup sets not saving Machine name bug Other machine usage bug (365mb used by….) Memory leak/ absurd resource usage Repeated MozyServerError2 Clicking the status window could open a Mozy error page [...] Read the rest »
MacMozy Beta Updated
Mozy updated their Mac client (a.k.a. MacMozy) earlier this week. The latest version is now 0.5.1.0. The only documented fix over version 0.5.0.0 is a fix identified as “Memory leak/ absurd resource usage”. A full list of earlier fixes and additional information can be found in the MacMoxy FAQ. While not new to this latest version a couple of new features have found their way into the beta. One is that now files greater than 4MB will take advantage of block level differential backups. This means that once a file [...] Read the rest »
MacMozy 0.5.0.0 Released
Mozy has updated their MacMozy client, which is still in beta. They didn’t publish a list of changes in this release, at least not yet. The issues listed were: Repeated MozyServerError2 Clicking the status window could open a Mozy error page in the browser Backup sets can now find files Spotlight doesn’t find Backs up files and folders moved into locations that [...] Read the rest »
MacMozy Beta Client Updated – Twice
Mozy released two updates to their Mac Mozy client last week. I started the week on Mac Mozy version 0.4.1.1, went to version 0.4.1.2 on Thursday and 0.4.1.4 on Friday. In other good news, Mozy is now publishing the list of fixes in new versions in their FAQ. Version 0.4.1.2 fixed the following bugs: Unable to select files on partitions beside the operating system’s partition. Log file filling up hard drive. Unable to select files on external hard drives. Selecting files and folders yielded strange sizes. The backup would hang [...] Read the rest »
Test Those Backups
Today brought another story of a company having to redo most of a month’s work due to failed backups. Business 2.0, a magazine that frequently reminds readers that they need to back up their data and compared it to… …flossing – everyone know’s it’s important, but few devote enough thought or energy to it. Their editorial system crashed and then lost all the work they’d done for their June issue. The only thing that saved them was the fear of litigation. They had copy-edited the text and sent it off [...] Read the rest »
Mozy Mac Backup Beta Goes Public
Mozy had begun the public beta of the MacMozy Backup and the client is now available for everyone to download from their home page. The version is 0.4.1.1 which is a new version for me. The previous version had failed to work for me in that backups would fail to complete and simply appear to hang up. If I rebooted the Mac this seemed to force Mozy to complete and record that fact. This problem has gone away for the latest version. I am very, very happy with the latest [...] Read the rest »
Mozy Mac Beta Software Update
Mozy has released an update to their Mac client software which is still an early beta. The version gets bumped from 0.4.0.8 to 0.4.0.9. I’ve been having a problem with the software lately where files vanish from the server. Although it appears they actually get removed by the client since I see delete messages in the log. Sometimes they get backed up again at a later time although at the moment I’ve only got 341MB out of my 1.2GB backup on the server. I’m hoping this release fixes that. I [...] Read the rest »
