Time For A Web Host Review

It's time to start some upgrades to my website and the VPS server it runs on. So even though I don't have any problems with my current host, and my server's been up for well over 300 days, so I decided to look at hosts that would provide more services. I eventually gave one a try but only stuck around for a day. Read the rest »

A New Web Host – Linode

Just before the New Years holiday I moved this site to a new web host, Linode. I’ve been with Slicehost for just over two years and don’t have any complaints and think they’re great. There’s an interesting thread on the Slicehost forum about how other vendors have matched and exceeded Slicehost’s offerings. In the thread even Slicehost has admitted they stagnated and haven’t taken advantage of the resources available to them through Rackspace which purchased them about a year ago. That’s part of my reason for shopping around, the same [...] Read the rest »

SquareSpace Considered

SquareSpace has been getting a lot of publicity in most tech podcasts I listen to. It had the feel of an orchestrated publicity campaign so I didn’t pay much attention to the hype and ignored it for awhile. But the thought of having a hosted website along with the ability to extensively customize the site made me decide to take a look at it, so I signed up for their free 14 day trial. The bottom line, there’s a lot to like but I won’t be moving any existing sites [...] Read the rest »

BlueHost Customer Service

I had more first experience with BlueHost customer service over the weekend and it was an excellent experience. They’d recently been advertising “unlimited domains”. My control panel still showed the old limit of domains and when I tried to add a sixth I received and error that I’d reached the limit. So I opened a ticket with tech support through the web and five minutes later I received an email that my account was upgraded although it may take up to two hours to show up. When I checked about [...] Read the rest »

Bluehost Updates It Hosting Plan

Bluehost updated it’s hosting plan recently and now offers “more” for the same price. They now offer 300GB of disk space, 3,000GB of bandwidth and will now host unlimited domains. Those are all nice numbers and I like Bluehost so far, but at what point do these numbers become so large they’re meaningless? While I’m sure some websites may near these limits (podcasts, video sites, or any other site which has large files) I have to believe that few sites (mine included) even come close. I have to believe that [...] Read the rest »

Success!!! Upgraded to WordPress 2.1.2 on Yahoo Hosting

I finally got my WordPress installation upgraded to WordPress 2.1.2 from WordPress 2.0.2. I had installed WordPress 2.0.2 through the Yahoo control panel. I’d been unable to successfully upgrade, just getting a blank page when running upgrade.php. I’d followed all the instructions from WordPress for the upgrade. I’d assumed it was related to Yahoo restricting .htacess or a plugin they created to do permalinks. But I tried one more time a couple days ago with the same result. I finally found this thread on the WordPress support forum that had [...] Read the rest »
