I finally got my WordPress installation upgraded to WordPress 2.1.2 from WordPress 2.0.2. I had installed WordPress 2.0.2 through the Yahoo control panel. I’d been unable to successfully upgrade, just getting a blank page when running upgrade.php. I’d followed all the instructions from WordPress for the upgrade. I’d assumed it was related to Yahoo restricting .htacess or a plugin they created to do permalinks. But I tried one more time a couple days ago with the same result. I finally found this thread on the WordPress support forum that had [...] Read the rest »
Auto Generate Broken Links
I’ve been looking around over on Google’s Webmaster tools. They’re reporting a growing number (now 24) of “404 – Not Found” errors when crawling the site. Sure enough, the URLs are bad. Most also seem to be for a second page of categories or second page of a days posting. At first, when the number was low, I did some searches, thinking I had used the URL someplace but never found it. I just noticed that when a category list, or a days posting are displayed, there’s a “Previous” link [...] Read the rest »
Mini Posts Plugin for WordPress
I just added he Mini Posts plugin on this site. If you look over on the right sidebar you’ll see a “OS News and Rumors” box. Items shown in that box won’t appear in the main blog. On my list of things to do I was looking for a way to add short posts to this blog without clogging up the main page. I also wanted a quick way to do it since it wasn’t worth a lot of time to me. Some templates I’d looked at in the past [...] Read the rest »
Comments and Comment Spam
In the recent past a couple comments posted to this site have been incorrectly flagged as spam. This means I actually have to log into the WordPress admin console to even know they exist and then to release them. I had been considering turning off the spam filter since I hadn’t received any real spam. Well, that changed this weekend. There were a couple dozen spam messages caught over this weekend. So the spam filter stays on and I’ll have to start checking the console regularly to process the spam. [...] Read the rest »
Website Update – Frustration then Satisfaction
[Updated Jan 20, 2007 - I no longer use Durable. I found that the drop down menus didn't work in Safari so I swapped it out. I went out to the WordPress Theme Tester for Durable and found they didn't work either.] If you’ve been here before you know the site has a new design. I haven’t been happy with the categories and the way static pages aren’t included in searches. So I spent most of the weekend looking at and testing options, with a side quest into a failed [...] Read the rest »
This Weeks Minor Website Updates
In addition to the blog posting that appear on the home page, the following updates were made to the site this past week. The Backup Project page was updated with the shortlist of software I’ll be evaluating. Added the following Thunderbird tip to the Cross Platform Apps page in the software zone: The Thunderbird spam filter must be trained after it’s enabled. This includes identifying both Spam and non-Spam messages. Select the message(s), right click and select Mark->As Junk/As Not Junk The Search page has a couple minor changes. The [...] Read the rest »
Project Pages Launched
This post is completely obsolete. Up along the top you’ll see a new tab called “Projects”. This is where I’ll be tracking some longer term endeavors. We’re kicking things off with two projects. The first is “Spam” where I’ll be trying to reduce the amount of spam that gets to my inbox along with how various programs and service handle spam and how e-mail addresses can get in the hands of spammers. The second is “Backup”. It’s time to review my current backup strategy and look at backup strategies for [...] Read the rest »
Grand Opening!!!
The OS Quest is now open in it’s new location. The fountain pen pages and photo galleries are still back at the old location. There’s nothing new posted but if your interested, they can be found here. The decision to move The OS Quest to a domain of it’s own (from .MAC) came about rather quickly a week ago. I picked Yahoo as the host for the simple reason of low cost, simple sign-up and all the buzzwords I was looking for. Becuase my ISP (SNET/SBC/AT&T or whatever name they’re [...] Read the rest »
Everything Previous Is Old
Everything prior to this post was imported from my old blog. They’re unchanged except for some format and spelling touch-ups. We’re still moving in and remodeling so if you’ve visited the old site there’s nothing new to speak of. We’re hoping to have the grand opening in a week or so. Read the rest »
