Windows Home Server is back on the Quest, I gave into an impulse and replaced my Ubuntu Server with Windows Home Server 2011 RC1 and put it into production. Santa’s finished his deliveries and is tipping back a few. Time for me to wrap things up for the year and get ready for the next one. November was a busy month on the Quest, not all of it stuff I would have wanted to do or expected, but it’s turning out OK. That's not a recent picture, but we did have our first dusting of snow this month. I’ve completed a couple of system builds. There was my new home server (more on that later). I’ discussed the CPU and motherboard I picked for the build, but my PC upgrades turned into a complete system build as everything was replaced except for the Velociraptor drive. When I started looking at a Home Server replacement back in October the plan was to get some new hardware and transition to it when Vail was released. Then Vail was gutted when when Microsoft removed drive extender and it became just another OS with nothing unique, at least not for me. Luckily this system build is flexible and I have options. I started to write this article on Sunday, at which time it had a lot different focus and the only thing that remains is the title. I was writing about what I liked in Vail and that many of the ways I use Windows Home Server had already migrated to Vail, despite it’s beta status. Then today Microsoft dropped a bomb and announced they were discontinuing Drive Extender in WHS and SBS. My first reaction was that WHS is now dead to me. Read the rest »

October comes to a close here in the States (and a few other countries) things have been moving along on the quest. There was a new OS, but after installing Ubuntu 10.10 to VirtualBox I haven’t used it very much. Instead I’ve spent most of my time working on my system builds.
