I’ve been looking at several domain registrars recently and have used a few in the past. I figure now would be a good time to summarize my views of each. In this article I’ll cover the registrars I’ve used in the past but not anymore. These registrars exist mostly to provide domain registration for their hosting customers. Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting – This is where I put my first website years ago. I picked them because they had a deal with my ISP for a low monthly price (no [...] Read the rest »
The OS Quest Trail Log #8
Another short update for the log. I spent some time trying to install Boot Camp on my iMac. It couldn’t resize the existing partition to make room for boot camp. I could image to another drive, then erase and image back. But I decided to try out iDefrag and explore the whole OS X doesn’t need defragging thing. My 500GB drive with about 250GB of data had 0.5% fragmentation, after being used for about 9 months. As expected (because they’re large and written to often), the Parallels VM drives were [...] Read the rest »
Success!!! Upgraded to WordPress 2.1.2 on Yahoo Hosting
I finally got my WordPress installation upgraded to WordPress 2.1.2 from WordPress 2.0.2. I had installed WordPress 2.0.2 through the Yahoo control panel. I’d been unable to successfully upgrade, just getting a blank page when running upgrade.php. I’d followed all the instructions from WordPress for the upgrade. I’d assumed it was related to Yahoo restricting .htacess or a plugin they created to do permalinks. But I tried one more time a couple days ago with the same result. I finally found this thread on the WordPress support forum that had [...] Read the rest »
They’re Back
As previously mentioned, when Yahoo added my web hosting account to my regular Yahoo account all my e-mail aliases vanished and e-mail started bouncing. Well, today I noticed that they’re back. But, they’re back in name only. I can see them, I can edit them, I can add them and I can delete them. But I can’t send to them. The mail bounces with a “the user does not have a yahoo.com account”. Even though I can pick an alias as a sending address from the list Yahoo gives me [...] Read the rest »
Yahoo ISP + Yahoo Web Hosting = Mail Nightmare
I thought I had researched Yahoo Web Hosting thoroughly and hadn’t come across any potential pitfalls. But things went downhill as soon as my domain was set up. Part of the problem was probably self-inflicted as I was using the Yahoo Mail beta software. What I didn’t know, and what wasn’t documented, was that the Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting service does not yet support then mail beta. In my defense, even now that I know what problems I had I can’t find any reference or warnings in the Yahoo [...] Read the rest »
